“Pretty” Purdie: King of the Funky Backbeat
Bluely Noted often disagrees with AllMusic, but we concur on Bernard Purdie’s debut lead session — “Not so much an album as it is a master class in the art of funk percussion, Soul Drums is the quintessential Bernard “Pretty” Purdie LP, an unstoppable rhythm machine made all the more memorable by its fiercely idiosyncratic production.” The “Purdie Shuffle” on the title-track might sound familiar — it was sampled by Beck on “Devil’s Haircut.”
